Nigerian Satellite Augmentation System (NSAS) is a Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) meant to close the gap and meet the need of an augmentation system in the African continent. It is a Navigation Overlay Service (NOS) similar to European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) arising from the need to provide Continuity, Availability, Integrity and Accuracy of GNSS signals. This is done by making differential corrections of the signals and broadcasting the integrity messages as an augmented signal in the L1 and L5 frequencies globally through NigComSat-1R for a wider coverage. This enables it meet requirements to be suitable for Aviation, Maritime, Public Safety, effectiveness of Location-based Services for Emergencies, Crisis management etc.
NIGCOMSAT is poised to provide safe and precise Satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) for productivity and value proposition over Africa and beyond with a mission to provide highly precise navigation and positioning services for public safety, transportation, geographic information system, security of critical and strategic national infrastructure in a mix of free and controlled market.
Strategic application areas are:
1.Transportation (Aviation, Maritime, Rail, Road & Inland Waterways).
2.Oil and Gas Sector.
3.Civil Engineering, Survey, Geographic Information System (GIS).
4.Public Safety, Disaster Preparedness and Security of strategic national infrastructure, Utility Management.
5.High yield agricultural practice, Tourism Promotion, Environmental Protection, Scientific Research among others.
The signal-in-space (SIS) with Pseudo Random Noise (PRN) Code 147 is currently undergoing test bed experimentation and trials to characterize and validate performance parameters.
