NIGCOMSAT Launches Satellite-based Support Scheme for Tech Startups

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited yesterday launched a satellite-based support scheme to foster innovation within the Nigerian space and satellite industry.

The scheme tagged the Accelerator Programme is meant to provide support to technology StartUps in Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, represented by Chief Cliff Ogbede, said that the nation stands on the brink of unlocking the vast potential of satellite technology, envisioning its impact not only on communication and connectivity but also on various applications influencing every aspect of daily life.

He described the Theme of the event, “Fostering Innovation in Satellite Technology”, as apt and timely, as it signalled a deliberate move towards taking a giant leap forward for Nigeria’s technological advancement and economic diversification.

Kalu said that the initiative aligns seamlessly with the government’s steadfast commitment to fostering innovation and supporting indigenous capacity building.

He however, expressed support for NIGCOMSAT’s efforts, Ogbede highlighted the crucial role of nurturing promising talents and providing them with essential resources and mentorship.

The lawmaker further commended NIGCOMSAT for its forward-looking approach, emphasising that such initiatives pave the way for a technologically advanced and economically diversified Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT, Send. Shuaibu Salisu flcommended NigComSat to coming up with such a fantastic initiative and charged heads of government agencies to be solution drivers.

“We are in a dare situation at the moment. You must see yourselves as CEOs of the nation.

“And must do so with cap of a marketer. Work in synergy and you must come together and seek solutions to your individual problems. Just be Solomon drivers”.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Managing Director, NIGCOMSAT

Mrs Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, said the accelerator programme, spanning 24 weeks, is poised to empower and propel Nigerian youth.

According to her, the scheme will pioneer start-ups, space enthusiasts, and early-stage companies into the burgeoning space-tech realm.

She also explained that the program compromise a unique blend of mentorship, networking, and exposure, saying the initiative would catapult selected startups onto the global stage.

Egerton-Idehen outlined the key stages of the programme, including the Sandbox Environment, Mentorship and Check-in Sessions, Strategic Growth Support, Visibility, Market Access, and the Wrap-up.

The Nigcomsat CEO, who described the program as a win-win situation for all stakeholders, highlighted the programme’s potential to position NIGCOMSAT Ltd as a key player in fostering innovation in the satellite industry, while also providing start-ups with market-fit products and access to national and global markets.

Egerton-Idehen expressed gratitude to the evaluators, mentors, and partners for their pivotal role in shaping the programme.

She urged participants and stakeholders to move forward with enthusiasm, collaboration, and a shared commitment to advancing the frontiers of space technology.
