NIGCOMSAT Celebrates International Girl in ICT Day

NIGCOMSAT, in collaboration with The Federal Ministry of Communications hosted more girls from over 16 schools in the FCT to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, an initiative backed by all ITU Member States in ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Rev. Busan, 2014), which aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of ICTs, enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector. International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in April every year.
The Permanent Secretary, Arch. Sonny Echono; MD, NIGCOMSAT, who was represented by GM, Administration, Mrs. R.A Suleiman; Directors from the Ministry of Communications and some members of the NIGCOMSAT Executive team attended the occasion. There were talks given by speakers from the sister agencies, namely: Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Galaxy Backbone including NIGCOMSAT. The Permanent Secretary presented prizes to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of three categories of competitions that were held the previous day.
In addition to the prizes, NIGCOMSAT presented the 1st prize-winners with a Broadband Internet service kits with free one-year subscription to each of the winners from the three categories. The broadband service will be installed in the schools of the prize-winners for use in their computer labs.
NIGCOMSAT has also collaborated with various organizations such as Digital Peers (an NGO) to host girls from over 6 schools around the FCT to a lecture, discussions on ICT by NIGCOMSAT female engineers, a facility tour and a breakfast session with the MD/CE, Abimbola Alale and the NIGCOMSAT Executive Management.
