Biography
Engr Tukur Mohammed Lawal is the current Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communication Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), Abuja, Nigeria.
Early Beginning:
Life for Engr. Lawal began in the quiet, agrarian town of Funtua, in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State where he was born in 1966. He attended the famous Bisije Primary School, Funtua, from 1973-1979 whereupon he obtained his Primary School Leaving Certificate. From there, he proceeded to Government Secondary School, Funtua, in Funtua local government area of Katsina State, from 1979-1984 and obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE). His desire for further education took him to the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria from 1984-1986. His stint there prepared him for admission to the Northern Nigeria Premier University, (Ahmadu Bello) University in 1986, where he graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering.
Not resting on his oars, Engr. Lawal was also at the Abubakar Tafawa University, Bauchi in 1996 for a Post Graduate Diploma programme in Management, and graduated in 1997 with Upper Credit. His self-development efforts have also seen him acquire more academic qualifications over time including a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Management), Certificate in Personal Effectiveness at the Famous Lagos Business School (LBS), a Certificate in High Impact Leadership (LBS), Professional Diploma in Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and he is currently pursuing a Doctorate Degree programme in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development at the University of Port Harcourt.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Engr. Lawal started his work as a voluntary primary school teacher at his former school at Funtua. He participated in the National Youth Service Corps programme as a class teacher with Methodist Comprehensive College, Sagamu, Ogun State. Shortly after his national service, he gained employment and was posted to Minna as Industrial Officer II under the Federal Ministry of Industry, IDC, in Minna, Niger State in 1992.
From the Ministry of Industry, Engr. Lawal moved to AshakaCem Plc in 1992 as a process Engineer. He became the Environmental Coordinator of AshaCem Plc from 1992-1999 when he was elevated to the position of Environment Manager from 2003-2005. Again, from 2003 to 2006, he was the Management Representative, ISO 900: 2000 Project. While retaining his position as Manager, he was moved to Health and Safety from 2005-2012. Between 2012 and 2013, he was Manager, Training and Learning of the Human Resource Department. Having exhibited skill and capacity for higher responsibilities, Engr. Lawal was, in 2013-2015 made the Country Health and Safety Manager in-charge of Nigeria and Benin Republic.
He was pioneer Provost of Mus’AB bn Umair College of Education, Bajoga in Gombe state from 2018-2022. This was another voluntary service in his kitties.
He also had a stint in the department of Communications and Public Affairs and Sustainable Development of Larfage Africa Plc as Regional Manager (AshakaCem North).
Before his appointment as Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer, NIGCOMSAT Ltd in December 2022, he was the Group Head, Environmental and Community Affairs of Dangote Cement Plants in ten countries. Saddled with sundry other operations under that conglomerate, he was also Director, Health, Community Affairs, Safety and Environment, Lagos.

HONORS/AWARDS:
Engr. Lawal’s prodigious performance in the places he worked never went unnoticed as the following awards testify: Merit award from the President, Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (2021); amongst the Best Safety Professionals by SAFETY AWARDS, Lagos 2015, Gombe Award for Service to Humanity by the North-East Federal Road Safety Corps; Letter of Congratulations (Commendation) on functional achievement from AshakaCem Plc, 2011; Individual performance Award received at Lafarge SA, CEO, Mr. Bruno Lafont, in November 2006 at AshakaCem, Nigeria. A Letter of commendation for leading AshakaCem’s QMS to ISO 9001:2000 Certification. Another Letter of Commendation and payment of EX-Gratia from AshakaCem, 2007. Appointed and Turbaned by HRH Emir of Funakaye as DURBIN Funakaye, making him a member of the Emirate Council in 2008. His winning stride started in his early days when he received the best physics student award in 1984 in Funtua.
RESEARCH WORK, PROJECTS, SEMINAR PAPERS AND PUBLICATIONS:
A prolific writer, Engr. Tukur M. Lawal has authored many books but not limited to the following: The Ethics in Health and Safety Management (2009); A history of MASKA DISTRICT (2008); and Environmental Protection as a Religious Duty (2006). He also wrote: A Funakaye Emirate of Gombe State (2011). The Appearance and Body Care of a Muslim (2000) among many others.
